<idAbs>This digital map database represents the general distribution of surficial and bedrock geologic units mapped in the Commonwealth of Virginia and compiled at a nominal scale of 1:250,000. New and modified geologic contacts were digitized on screen by geologists at approximately 1:24,000 from maps that ranged from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000-scale. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology, generally following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This metadata report provides an overview of the data content of this GeMS geodatabase and associated files.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This digital map database represents an update to the contact lines, geologic map units, and map unit descriptions found on the 1993 Geologic Map of Virginia and is intended to show the generalized geology of the state. The database also provides surficial geologic units derived from 10-meter LIDAR and new geologic mapping (where available) as a separate feature class. It is recommended that users not use the data beyond the recommended scale range of 1:100,000. Users requiring more detailed geologic mapping should refer to the original geologic map citation found the "DataSources" field of the various feature classes and non-spatial tables.</idPurp>

<measDesc>The accuracy of the geologic data varies depending on the compiled map. In general, contact lines were digitized on screen at 1:24,000-scale. The accuracy of the line work (and generated map unit polygons) is reflected in the LocationConfidenceMeters field in the ContactsAndFaults feature class. Surficial units were interpreted primarily using 10-meter LIDAR or from geologic maps, if available. All line work (bedrock and surficial) was given a corresponding data source citation, identifying the original map source for the line work or the geologist who made the contact line interpretation.</measDesc>

<measDesc>The geologic bedrock data and geologic descriptions include information from published geologic maps up to 2021 and is considered to be an update to the geologic map line work originally compiled in 1993.
